The Pombaline Downtown, dating from the 18th and 19th century, is a remarkable achievement of the Marquis of Pombal, who undertook the enormous task of rebuilding the Lisbon centre carefully planned, with elegant streets and buildings. The Praça do Comércio, known by the locals as Terreiro do Paço, is a huge open space and was the site of the Royal Palace for 400 years.
